October is Virginia wine month, so naturally this is my favorite time of year to visit local wineries! I recently visited Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse. This tasting room, which opened its doors in 2018, is nestled in the heart of Virginia’s picturesque wine country and is located just 25 minutes from downtown Charlottesville. They offer visitors a scenic escape with mountain views, delicious food, a warming facility and exceptional wine and beer. It’s rare to find a place in Virginia wine country that produces both quality wine and beer in the same place! This makes it the perfect spot for gatherings because there is something for everyone.
In this article, I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite things from my recent visit! From their gastronomic delights, craft beverages, and seasonal activities there is so much that makes Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse a must-visit destination.
At the heart of Mount Ida Reserve’s Tasting Room & Taphouse appeal are its exceptional offerings. The establishment is renowned for its diverse and carefully curated selection of locally made wines and craft beers. Wine enthusiasts can embark on a journey through the vineyards of Virginia, with an extensive list of local wines grown by grapes just steps from the property. From a crisp Sauvignon Blanc to a robust Petit Verdot, Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room offers an impressive array of options for wine lovers. They even offer wine flights for those who are curious and want to try a variety of wines, or specialty beverages for something seasonal and unique.
For beer aficionados, the Taphouse serves as a haven for craft beer lovers. All of the beers are brewed on sight and they offer a wide variety of options. Similar to their wine flights they offer beer flights where you can choose your own beers to sample, making it the perfect option for those who want to try new things! Whether you prefer a hoppy IPA or a refreshing wheat beer, the Taphouse offers a diverse range of options that cater to all palates.
A visit to Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse is not complete without indulging in their culinary delights. The menu is a celebration of local ingredients and flavors, expertly crafted to complement the wines and beers they offer. My favorite part about their menu is the classic Southern-Virginia fare. Some menu highlights are the Virginia Sandwich, Wagyu Hot Dog, Pimento Cheese and Tomato Burrata Salad. They also have wood-fire pizzas, a variety of small plate options that are great for sharing, and classic dishes you’d expect to find at a tasting room such as charcuterie and cheese boards.
A standout feature of the Taphouse’s menu is its ability to pair dishes with both wine and beer, making it a perfect destination for those looking to explore the art of food and beverage pairing. Whether you prefer a classic pairing of Cabernet Sauvignon and a cheeseburger, or the zesty kick of a hoppy IPA with a fried chicken sandwich, the staff at Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse is happy to guide you in creating a harmonious pairing experience.
No meal is complete without dessert, and at Mount Ida Reserve they have a list of all “Local Favorites”. On this list you can find ice cream sandwiches, gourmet chocolates and chocolate bars from nearby merchants to indulge in.
The Facility at Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse is designed to provide guests with an immersive experience that showcases the beauty of the Virginia countryside. The Tasting Room, adorned with large windows and a rustic yet elegant interior, offers breathtaking views of the rolling hills and mountains. Visitors can enjoy wine and beer tastings at the bar, chat with knowledgeable staff, and take in the serene ambiance that defines Mount Ida Reserve.
For those who prefer the outdoors, the spacious patio provides the perfect setting to sip a glass of wine or a cold beer while basking in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. The facility is also equipped with a cozy fireplace for those cooler evenings, making it a year-round destination.
Mount Ida Reserve Tasting Room & Taphouse truly comes to life with the changing seasons, offering a wide range of seasonal activities and events. On their website you can stay up to date on new events. At the end of October, they are having a Trick or Treat Craft Beer + Wine Fest, Sunday October 29th. It will feature local breweries and wineries! They also have a Sunset Music Series every Saturday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Personally, I’ve always loved visiting Mount Ida Reserve during the holidays because they decorate the property with lights and Christmas trees and it feels so festive!
